Jan Hoek

Jan Hoek (1984) lives and works in Amsterdam, graduated the Image and Language department at the Rietveld Academie in 2011. Jan works mostly as a photographer and finds his models in all corners of the world, in all corners of our society. Whether it’s a group of pirates in Nairobi who never saw the ocean, or his unusual friend and muse Supermodel Kim. His photo's are characterized by a personal approach and relation to his subjects, and often portrait the dreams and desires of his models.

Jan wanted to make an embroidered art work of one of his favorite photos of Kim, a homeless heroin addict who stayed at his house for a little while. He supports her dream of becoming a famous super model in any way he can, so the decision on what design to choose for UNFRAMED was easily made.

He is represented by Galerie Ron Mandos, and won the Charlotte Köhler prize in 2015. His work has been on show at the FoMu in Antwerp, FOAM, Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam, the Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, China, Delta Flux, Jakarta and Lagos Photo Festival, Lagos.
